- is at least two parts
- has a least one convex side (that's a outward curved surface)
- Has at least one concave side (that's an inward curved surface)
- Dimensions
- Codega will check the technical drawing page
- with dimensions
- as many views as necessary to show that you created this shape
- One 3D view
- Next let's talk PLASTICS!
- Watch this!

CLASS ACTIVITIES
- No quiz -- you guys are cheating monsters so there isn't really a way to assess this info. Oh well....
- Today and Friday are going to be about knowledge acquisition -- read this stuff and either
- Print and then highlight / annotate / underline
- Take AP World style reading notes
- Whatever you do, make sure you have a firm foundational knowledge of materials. We will do some things to help supplement this knowledge but for right now you need to just get the info!
- This is a lot of stuff -- so much so that the school servers won't even email it to me from the copy machine. There are 4 parts to read -- you need to read all of them and they will all be posted eventually...
- Enjoy!

CLASS ACTIVITIES
- Let's go over the posters from last class -- Finish up!
- I'll give you a minute tops to hit the highlights of your material property!
- This is important because designers need to know what materials can and cannot do when picking stuff to make products out of!
- How do they pick? Well....they consult MATERIAL SELECTION CHARTS:

ESSENTIAL IDEA
- Materials are selected for manufacturing products based primarily on their properties.
CLASS ACTIVITIES
- Codega will assign you a material property. Your job is to create an old school classroom poster that captures the following information:
- 2021 Prop of Materials Assignment
- Your property -- Make it super clear what your property is -- make it bold and stand out!
- A large image that captures the nature of your property (this should be something instantly recognizable and 100% related to your material property
- An example of your property in the real world (i.e application)
- What type of property is it?
- Physical (red font for the title)
- Mechanical (blue font for the title)
- Smart (green font for the title)
- Aesthetic (orange font for the title)
- Any associated vocabulary
- Any formula or equation associated with your property.
- Why it is important to consider in the design process -- this is a brief statement of when designers need to consider this material property.
- What it is NOT (only applies to some and should be pretty obvious)
- You have seen these in classrooms your entire school career . Here are a few refreshers!
- Done right, these should take ALL BLOCK!
- Remember, DESIGN MATTERS! It doesn't have to hang in the Louvre but it needs to be intentionally designed. If it looks slapped together then you'll lose some points! What does intentional look like?
- Images are lined up and appropriately sized.
- Fonts make sense
- Textboxes are aligned
- No huge gaps or empty spaces
- Clear and readable
- Save these as a PDF
- FILE --> SAVE AS --> in the drop down menu choose PDF --> SAVE
- Email this to john.codega@richlandone.org by 6pm today (3/2)!
HOMEWORK
- Next class we'll run through ALL of these -- be ready to talk about them like a human being and NOT just read it.
- We'll have a quiz on these things next week!
2/26/21
- Topic 2 and 8 Test today!
- DO NOT CHEAT. IF I THINK YOU ARE CHEATING THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES!
- That's it! Have a great weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2/24/21
CORE TOPICS
ESSENTIAL IDEA
- Sustainable development is concerned with satisfying human needs for resources now and in the future without compromising the carrying capacity of the planet
CLASS ACTIVITIES
- What exactly are you guys saying about Design Tech to the 10th graders?
- Take out your reading notes from last class.
- I'll make an assignment for you to send in a picture / highlighted word document of some part of the reading from last class. This will be a quiz grade (should be the easiest 100 ever if you did the work!)
- Now I'll hit some highlights from that reading. DO NOT TAKE THESE NOTES.
- Instead, take a look at what you underlined/highlighted/wrote and SUPPLEMENT them with what I talk about.
- If you need to add to your notes then please do so. If you already identified this stuff as important just make sure to put a star (or whatever) next to it!
- That brings us to the conclusion of Units 2 and 8!
- Next class we'll have a test on all this stuff. It will be a randomly assigned partner test that you'll work collaboratively on to complete. WOO HOO!
- Take a few minutes to read this -- worth your time to see what COVID looks like going forward.
HOMEWORK
- Study for the test next class!

CLASS ACTIVITIES
- Talk about what you read last time
- Take a few minutes to take some reading notes on the following
- Again, either take APWH style reading notes OR print this and highlight/underline/whatever
- IB LOVES THIS TOPIC -- it WILL show up on the test next year (M22 -- that's Paper 3)
- I'll create an assignment at the beginning of next class for you to turn in something specific from this reading -- you have been warned.
- That's it -- I can't think of anything fun to do with this part.
- We'll hit the highlights on Wednesday so make sure you have some background knowledge...
- Here is the reading -- topic 8 textbook.pdf
HOMEWORK
- Finish the reading notes!

CLASS ACTIVITIES
- Some Topic 8 notes....
- These are going to take a minute so settle in...
- If you miss class the notes are on the TEAMS page under the Files tab!
- Here are a few articles to read
HOMEWORK
- None in particular! Finish reading if you didn't get to it in class!
2/16/21
CORE TOPICS
- 2 -- Resource management and sustainable production
ESSENTIAL IDEA
- Resource management and sustainable production carefully consider three key issues—consumption of raw materials, consumption of energy, and production of waste—in relation to managing resources and reserves effectively and making production more sustainable.
CLASS ACTIVITIES
- Let's discuss the project you did over the past week or so!
- How did it go?
- What do you need to focus on in terms of your OnShape proficiency?
- Remember, this IS NOT GOING AWAY!!!!!! You need to be able to use OnShape for the IA next year so it is YOUR responsibility to make sure you can work with it like a human!
- A few classes ago we touched on LCA -- check out a real one!
- Here is the Levi's one
- Answer the following questions in your notebook:
- Identify the two most important areas of environmental concern addressed Levi's in this study (hint -- Land occupation isn't one of them). Explain your choices.
- Levi's compares their pair of jeans to other activities that are bad for the environment. What stood out the most to you? Why?
- Explain the role that Levi's customers play in the environmental impact of jeans (make sure to include specific answers from the document).
- What are the problems with this document (there are a few -- think about what most of the data is dealing with). Explain your answer citing specific evidence from the documents.
- That's all folks! We start Topic 8 next class!
2/9 - 2/15
- Remember that thing you designed out of recycled materials? Guess what? Now you get to make it on OnShape (mmmmmuuuuhahahahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahahahaha!!).
- Since this is tough (a lot of you may need some refreshers on how to do this!) it will be due on Monday (2/15 -- Happy President's Day!!!!) night by midnight!
- It will be a MAJOR GRADE so do a nice job!!!!!!!!
2/5/21
- Today is going to be sneaky
- Using ONLY recycled materials create a useful product. It can be a conceptual design (that means it doesn't have to work you only have to produce something tangible - that means it exists in the world).
- You have to identify a problem and EXPLAIN what your product is and how your design solves it / works.
- It has to reflect 1.5 hours of work (30 minutes in class and 1 hour over the weekend)
- It MUST be made out of TRASH (please please please do NOT create new trash for this). Raid the recycling but don't throw something away just to use it in your project!
- Submit via TEAMS
- a brief written description (see above)
- Picture
- A list of the materials you used
- This is going to be a MAJOR assessment -- do a nice job please!
HOMEWORK
- Designs are due Sunday night by 8!
2/3/21
CORE TOPICS
- 2 -- Resource management and sustainable production
- 2.5 -- Green Design
- 2.6 -- Eco Design
ESSENTIAL IDEA
- Resource management and sustainable production carefully consider three key issues—consumption of raw materials, consumption of energy, and production of waste—in relation to managing resources and reserves effectively and making production more sustainable.
CLASS ACTIVITIES
- Let's discuss the activity from last class
- Remember, you need to create something TANGIBLE that you can look back at in May 2022 to study from! IB loves Topics 2 & 8 so make sure you are taking the notes and completing the activities as they are assigned.
- Being mostly virtual, this topic is sort of notes heavy but that's not a bad thing -- we just have to get through a bunch of it and realize that it's COVID times and we have to make the best out of it!
- Take a few more notes -- this time on 2.5 and 2.6!
- Since we have a 1/2 day on Friday I'll save the LCA activity for then!
- Take a look at this -- Fashion footprint! Thanks KA Scott!

CLASS ACTIVITIES
- Quiz is bumped to Monday -- I have one but realized it won't really work for you to take at home so I'll have to marinate on how I want you to take it....
- How was the PSAT yesterday?
- Unfortunately this is a unit that is pretty heavy on direct instruction. So...

CORE TOPICS
- 2 -- Resource management and sustainable production
- 2.1 -- Resources and Reserves
ESSENTIAL IDEA
- Resource management and sustainable production carefully consider three key issues -- consumption of raw materials, consumption of energy, and production of waste -- in relation to managing resources and reserves effectively and making production more sustainable.
CLASS ACTIVITIES
- We are taking notes today! You need to make sure you have these notes in your notebook. This is a popular topic for the IB test.

- Take a look at this packet
- Working in small groups you will create a PPT slide about a subtopic from the packet. You need to read your section (and maybe a bit of what comes before it and a little bit that comes after it), talk about it as a group and then create PPT slides that summarizes the main ideas IN YOUR OWN WORDS.
- Notice I didn't say divide it up and each person do a little bit of it -- this is collaboration NOT division of labor!
- The Topics:
- Methodologies for Waste Reduction and designing out waste
- Dematerialization and Product Recovery Strategies
- The Circular Economy
- Embodied Energy
- Distributing Energy - The Grid system and Systems for Individual energy generation
- Quantifications and mitigation of Carbon Emissions
- Batteries, Capacitors, etc.
- Your PPT slide must include the following:
- The main info in your own words
- Bullets NOT paragraphs!
- Complete thoughts NOT complete sentences!
- A picture that directly relates to your topic
- A real world example of your topic
- A max of 2 slides.
- FORMAT
- No design templets please (that means plain white)
- ONE person from each group needs to submit the PPT to the assignment page-- I'll put them all together into one presentation that I'll post before next class
- Whoever submits the PPT needs to title it with the topic name NOT group members.
- Please list the names of the people in your group.
- You have to quickly present it next class!
HOMEWORK
- Make sure your presentations are done
- The are due by SUNDAY night at 6pm
1/19
- Let's talk about the test from last week!
- Review some of the videos/articles you watched last class
- Go over the definitions from last class
- Today we'll tackle Resources and Reserves (need to know the differences!)
- Renewable vs. Nonrenewable resources individual work
- In your notebook:
- Define each term
- Find five examples of each type of resource (NOT only energy!)
- Quick notes on renewability and resource reserves
- Finish up by talking about the product that you found around your house (last classes homework!)
HOMEWORK
- Nothing today! We go again on Thursday...
1/14/21
- Since YouTube has become more restrictive for teachers (you know, PBS and 60 Minutes are not to be trusted!) we are going to do today asynchronously -- that will also give me time to start grading your tests! These are actually pretty easy to grade but pulling dad duty/kindergarten aide/high school teacher doesn't really lend itself to lots of time to grade. Anyway, let's get this done and next week we can do some direct instruction!
- Today is the intro to Resource Management and Sustainable Production -- why is this a key factor for Design Tech?
- Find an example of a design that provided an innovative solution to meet basic human needs for energy, food and raw materials with renewable resources. Be ready to share with the class next time.
