  • Finish the picnic tables
  • Come back inside and talk about the last test grade and your 9 weeks exam:
    • Test -- what do YOU think you deserve on the table building.  Write up a short description and give me a grade between 0-100 based on your effort, contributions, etc.   
    • 9 Weeks Exam -- Peer grade for other members of your group.  Again, it needs to be 0 - 100 with a justification with the grade (again, based on effort and contributions, etc).  I will average these along with my observations to produce a final grade.  
  • Deliver tables to the teachers

  • Time to decorate the tables -- they should be almost done today!

  • All I heard about this week was how much stuff you guys have to do -- how about using this class to get something done.  Notice that didn't say play games on your phone or go to sleep.  USE THIS TIME TO GET SOMETHING DONE! 
  • DO NOT LET Ms. CLEVELAND TELL ME THAT YOU DIDN't GET STUFF DONE!

  • Another workshop day!
  • Goal for today:
    • Get the legs on
    • Get the seat supports on
    • Get the cross member in place 
    • Get the seat slats on
    • And that will wrap up  the construction of the picnic table.  Next we need to think about personalization!

  • Hopefully you can begin construction on the actual table today!

  • Let's touch on your IA's today (sorry, I have to attend a funeral in Florence this afternoon so no workshop today -- we'll get back at it next week!)
    • I would like to conference with each of you about your initial ideas.
    • In the meantime, take another look at these IAs:
    • Just read over the PART A's (stop when you hit any sketches -- that's Part B) and answer the following questions:
      1. Identify the problem (notice I didn't say solution!) -- basically summarize it!
      2. List the types of research the student used to justify this as a problem.
      3. Was the research comprehensive?  Did the research show that this is a widespread problem that needs a new/innovative solution?  Explain!
      4. Are the design specifications clear, measurable, and feasible?  If so provide examples and if not provide examples with an explanation.     
      5. Give it a grade based on the rubric found in this document on page 109 (its the Part A Rubric)

        2. Justify your grade ____/9! 

HOMEWORK

  • If you didn't get the ok for an idea from Codega then you need to keep brainstorming ideas!!!  Come back with new ones by MONDAY APRIL 29th.

    • 10.5 - Economic Viability 

ESSENTIAL IDEA 

  • 10.5 - Designers must consider the economic viability of their designs for them to gain a place in the market.

CLASS ACTIVITIES

  • Let's continue to discuss the graphic organizers from last time
  • Now we can have some fun!!!!
    • Today we begin to look at the picnic tables! 
    • First let's look at the plan.
    • Let's head to the shop and take a look at our lumber for this project
  • The last bit of class
    • Read this about 10.5 and the case study.  Pretty interesting stuff...

    • 10.4 - Quality management

ESSENTIAL IDEA

  • 10.3 - Computer-integrated manufacturing uses computers to automatically monitor and control the entire production of a product.
  • 10.4 - Quality management focuses on producing products of consistent required quality.

CLASS ACTIVITIES

  • Quick check of the homework from last class... 
  • Again, quickly hit on the IA -- any more questions?
    • There seems to be some confusion about what I'm asking for on Friday... 
  • Your test will be ready to hand back....sometime?

ESSENTIAL IDEA

  • 10.1 - Justin time and just in case are opposing strategies utilized by the manufacturer
  • 10.2 - Lean production aims to eliminate waste and maximize the value of a product based on the perspective of the customer.

CLASS ACTIVITIES

  • Talk about your IA's a bit more...any questions?
  • Time to discuss Topic 10 (it's topic 4's family)
    • Yup, these are some notes.  Settle in kids.  We are going to work on Topic 10 until spring break!  WOO HOO!

  • Read the Topics 10.1 and 10.2 handout that Codega gives you.  Spend some time interacting with it and be ready for Codega to spot check that you read it next class!

ESSENTIAL IDEAS

  • The fundamental principle of UCD is that understanding the needs of the user is key to designing the best products.
  • Usability is about how easy it is to use a product or system
  • The designer needs to understand the reasons behind the behaviors, wants, and needs of the user
  • Users have a central role in evaluating whether the product meets their needs and wants
  • Usability is not the only factor for a designer to consider; products can be designed to evoke pleasure and emotions.   

CLASS ACTIVITIES

  • We can talk for a second about the test from last week.  Some people still need to finish it but so nothing specific -- more like did you think it was fair, etc.
