10/24
- Make the changes to A & B that Codega suggested
- It's not that I don't trust you guys to do it later it's just that I don't trust you.
- I will spot check this for a grade -- basically did you make some type of changes and did you work on it all block?
- Also to get done today:
- Start thinking about Part C
- Put together a working list of possible materials and components
- If you are going to use premade components for some of your prototype make sure you have at least 3-5 options.
- You may also want to go back and look at PART B and add some of this information.
- EXAMPLE -- if you are looking at handles to add:
- In PART B you need to add something about how you evaluated shape/size
- Then in PART C you break down 3-5 types of the shape/size you picked in B.
10/22
- Codega will conference with you individually about Part B
- While this is happening please mark and explain the following part C's:
- Codega needs another grade for this 9 weeks so please complete this assignment TODAY in class.
10/19
- Check your two mockups (this is going to be the 9 weeks exam for you guys!)
- Talk about the remainder of Part B (which is due on MONDAY!)
- Taking photos
- Evaluating them against the specifications
- Justifying your response
- Examples are here
HOMEWORK
10/17
- Its been a minute...
- Mock-ups ARE DUE THURSDAY
- PART B IS DUE MONDAY!
10/5
- Continue to work on Part B
- Part B is due NEXT FRIDAY 10/12 (I know we don't have class that say but it needs to be done and added to the IA document by Friday at noon) -- I want to look them over that afternoon (since it's a teacher work day and all)
HOMEWORK
- If you didn't get the work done that was due today...GET IT DONE!
10/1 & 10/3
- Work on Part B
- For your 5 formal iterations you need to get feedback before moving on to the two that you select to formally evaluate against the design specifications.
- You need to get feedback from at least 14 users/clients/target audience.
- All 5 of the formal iterations need to have ANNOTATIONS!
- These should reference:
- the user feedback
- additional research
- your thought process
- The point is to SHOW the reader how/why your designs evolved.
HOMEWORK
- PART B is due Friday October 12th (which is a 1/2 day)
9/27
KEY CONCEPTS
OBJECTIVES
- Demonstrate an understanding of the IA Part B rubric
- Examine the requirements of IA Part B
- Show tangible progress on Part B
CLASS ACTIVITIES
- FIRST:
- Take a look at your Part A
- Go through and label your Design and Marketing Specifications
- 1.1 --
- 1.2 --
- 2.4 --
- 3.5 --
- etc...
- Time to develop some ideas!
- From your user feedback and the Design and Marketing specifications from Part A, select 5 designs to bring forward to the next stage.
- You will model the five (after they have undergone changes/improvement/combo with other ideas)
- TinkerCAD (just because we don't have AutoDesk installed on our machines)
- Google Sketch Up (use the free web based version)
- Or you can construct cardboard proof of concept models
- ALL need to be annotated (obviously they are digital so you need to take pictures/screenshots that you will import into your IA and then annotate. I suggest you write your annotations as you finish each design and then you can create text boxes and format later on when you are putting part B together. Please don't wait until you are putting it all together on October 12th to annotate them -- write them while it is fresh in your mind!). Be sure to reference your Design and Marketing specs (you can just use the # -- i.e. 1.3, 1.7) in your annotations as well!
- Please look at this page -- it will help http://www.ruthtrumpold.id.au/destech/?page_id=48
- Please look over the checklist provided here
- Still confused what Part B should look like? Check out these examples released from IB:
HOMEWORK
- The second iterations of your design will be checked for a grade on FRIDAY 10/5 but they most likely need to be completed before this date if you are going to meet the 10/12 deadline. If you get done before this please get feedback and begin work on the next round of iterations (the two finalists evolved designs).
9/25
KEY CONCEPTS
OBJECTIVES
- Demonstrate an understanding of the IA Part B rubric
- Examine the requirements of IA Part B
- Show tangible progress on Part B
CLASS ACTIVITIES
- Codega will check your napkin sketches for a grade.
- Individually discuss the napkin sketches w/ Codega
- Meanwhile:
- Get user feedback about the sketches to help decide which ideas to take forward
- PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO DO THIS CORRECTLY AND HONESTLY. Any made up feedback will result in some academic misconduct issues for you...
- Here is a helpful document that you can use to document your feedback
- Once you have gotten feedback it is your job to refine five ideas. This can take the form of:
- More formal drawings w/ heavy annotations describing the changes you made/ideas you combined/further research you did
- Tinker CAD or real CAD renderings of the designs w/ heavy annotations describing the changes you made/ideas you combined/further research you did. You can 3D print these if you want as well!
- Cardboard mockups of the designs w/ heavy annotations describing the changes you made/ideas you combined/further research you did (you need to take pictures of them!
- Please look at this page -- it will help http://www.ruthtrumpold.id.au/destech/?page_id=48
- Please look over the checklist provided here
HOMEWORK
- Get at least 8 documented users/clients/etc to give feedback on the first batch of sketches.
- Watch this video and come next class ready to practice actual drawing!
9/21
KEY CONCEPTS
OBJECTIVES
- Create a schedule for the IA (due dates)
- Demonstrate an understanding of the IA Part B rubric
- Examine the requirements of IA Part B
CLASS ACTIVITIES
- Take a look at Part B
- IT WILL BE DUE 10/12 (Friday)
- Specific feedback from the IA's last year:
- "Part B should show how initial ideas evolve through development (really show design thinking). This is communicated through annotation, graphical and physical models (WITH INPUT FROM USERS/CUSTOMERS/EXPERTS along the way). THEREFORE, unrefined ideas should look significantly different from developed ideas."
- Let's look at the rubric and clarifications
- And then look at THIS CHECKLIST!
- Take a look at this one
- Take a look a some examples from last year -- but remember, they all got marked down so PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THESE AS PERFECT EXAMPLES TO EMULATE.
HOMEWORK
- Come back next class with 10-12 napkin drawings -- this is the brainstorm/idea generation phase. Use your research to inform your ideas!
9/19
- Time to peer grade your Part A's from last year.
- Your job as the peer grader:
- Use the checklist that Codega hands out and do a first reading/evaluation of the Part A. Use a check mark or an X for each part.
- On a separate sheet of paper give actual constructive feedback for any item that did not receive a checkmark.
- Once you are finished peer grading take a few minutes to conference with your partner -- explain the changes needed.
- Now, reread your own IA
- take the feedback you received and make the changes that you notice and that your partner recommended.
- Once all that is complete you are done. Codega will start looking at these 1st block tomorrow (9.20) so make sure you have made all necessary changes before then.
- You will receive a grade for working hard on this all period (and some of you desperately need a 100 in the gradebook...)
9/17
- Test (yup). We need to get this out of the way...
- Turn in the tactical urbanism stuff
- IA!
- Part A Review
- Look at this and then grade it (just pgs 2-10)
- Grade it according to this rubric:
-
9/7
- 1B
- Enjoy the IB breakfast
- Take a look at this e-book
- http://tacticalurbanismguide.com/
- Think about a project idea that could utilize tactical urbanism on campus.
- On Tuesday we will take the test and then discuss your ideas!
- 2B
9/5
HOMEWORK
8/31
- Turn in the 1 pagers
- PRESENTATIONS!
8/29
- Continue to work on your 1 page documents
- Remember, the design MATTERS! If it looks like a word document then your grade will suffer. Also, a template does not qualify as design -- I'll just send your grade to the Microsoft designer who created the template; I'm sure they'll be pleased.
- Work on the activity
- You can pitch ideas to Codega (might be a good idea so you don't end up with a 7/100)
HOMEWORK
- ALL 1 pagers due FRIDAY
- We'll start presentations (in order)
8/27
- Some of you turned in a one page document. If you did:
- Codega will conference with you about it -- chances are there are some changes that need to be made...
- While you wait, plan a hands on activity...
- If you didn't turn in a document:
- Sketch out a layout for your one page document and then meet with Codega -- chances are changes will be made...
- If you get that done then start planning your hands on activity...
- NO MATTER WHAT WE ARE PRESENTING ON FRIDAY!!!!
HOMEWORK
- Be ready for FRIDAY!
- A word on naming conventions:
8/23
- Due to the lack of laptops we will get some other stuff that needs to get done, done.
- Put up the ACF sign and redesign the light layout. Also move things back from the 400 hall closet to Codega's room.
- Clean up the shop!
- NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, WE WILL GET DT CONTENT DONE NEXT CLASS!
8/21
- Let's get back into it!
- Expectations for this year:
- First assignment of your senior year:
- Review!
- Here is your assignment for the rest of the week. Presentations are due on MONDAY.
- PLEASE do a nice job...
- Create a 1 page "MUST KNOW" sheet for the topic Codega assigns you.
- The one page document MUST CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:
- At least three images that relate to your topic (good ones too -- not the first hit on Google Images)
- Covers all aspects of the topic -- make sure you hit everything that is in the IB DT Guide
- Has a link to at least one video that relates to your topic.
- Has an easy to read, follow and has an aesthetically pleasing layout (remember, this is DESIGN technology after all!)
- Emailed to Codega by the end of class on Thursday -- NO EXCEPTIONS!
- A five (5) minute hands on activity that reinforces the content from your project.
- The activity must demonstrate creativity and analytical thinking (NO WORKSHEETS or anything that is related to a worksheet -- no crosswords, fill in the blank, etc. THIS IS A HANDS ON ACTIVITY!!!!
- No longer than 10 minutes but no shorter than 5 minutes
- Helps the class gain a deeper understanding of your topic.
- Each of these will count as a test grade (the first two of the year) and you will be assessed on Wed. and Friday on your progress towards.
- Topic assignments
- Here are the rubrics
-
HOMEWORK
- Pick an episode of 99% Invisible (https://99percentinvisible.org/ or search for it on your podcast ap of choice).
- Pick an episode that you think is interesting -- really look, don't just pick one from the top of the list) and come to school ready to talk about it.
- There will be specific questions about why you picked the episode you picked -- vague answers will get you a zero for the first grade of this 9 weeks!
