The ACF Recycled Regatta is one of the highlights of Design Tech Year One. Unfortunately, while this activity is fun it also requires a good deal of work and documentation. You will complete a modified version of Parts A & B of the IA.
Below are the requirements for the documentation:
PART A
- Research types of boat design (there are a 1,000,000 different types of boats -- don't just make a simple one -- like this clip art)
- DOCUMENTATION for the abbreviated Part A:
- An image board
- This needs to be FOCUSED not just on boats but other design cues!
- 1-2 pages using PUBLISHER
- Using the design specifications Codega gave you create an annotated chart so you can evaluate your design and figure out if it meets all of the criteria.
- Remember, if your boat doesn't meet all of the requirements then you will not pass this assignment.
- THIS PART IS ABOUT EXPLORING IDEAS NOT FIGURING OUT A SOLUTION YET!
This should be on approximately TWO pages (1 for the image board and 1 for the chart)
PART B (way more work to do)
1. Generating original ideas
- Start with napkin sketches (number the individual sketches) 10 - 15 ideas
- Select about 5 ideas to incrementally improve so to better meet the appropriate specifications
- Make low fidelity card/clay etc models of the 5 (documented with pictures)
- Evaluate them against the specifications, with the client and peer review (summarise the client and peer feedback)
- Choose two based on the evaluation
This should be on approximately six A4 (letter) pages or equivalent.
2. Communicating ideas clearly using appropriate techniques
- graphic, CAD, and physical (3d printed and card) modelling.
- appropriate and meaningful annotations to identify key features that explain how they meet the design specifications
- annotations should show begin thinking and be linked to previous designs
3. Undertaking additional (and record it) research as required to inform development.
- Concept models in the form of sketches, CAD, 2D and 3D models should be used to establish the validity of ideas against specifications before refining ideas through detailed development.
- This is the iterative design pocess!
- TEST,TEST, TEST
- against the specifications
- peer appraisal
- You should consider the appropriate use of conceptual, graphical, physical and CAD models to develop, refine and test their ideas.
- Develop your two chosen ideas further with extra modelling (Graphic, CAD, etc)
- Continue annotations (see above)
- Annotations should show begin thinking and be linked to previous designs
This should be on approximately four A4 (letter) pages or equivalent.
5. Justifies the most appropriate idea for detailed development.
- Evaluate ideas and models against the design specification to identify the most feasible solution.
- The most appropriate idea should be validated against specifications before development is refined to enable manufacture.
- The most appropriate idea should be validated by the client and peer/expert
- Present the most feasible idea.
- Justification for chosen solution.
This should be on approximately one A4 (letter) pages or equivalent.
